TTemporary Out Of Order 2015

Temporary Out Of Order is my homage to my broken and recovered elbow. The object in the picture is my own elbow after surgery. In the night of 31th October 2015 I made a nasty fall and ended up in the same hospital were I was born. What a coincidence. Diagnose, back bruised and elbow broken. At 04.00 s’ in the morning we drove home and endless drive. Once we got home, my partner collected the bed from upstairs to ground floor. I stayed in this bed for a month. I could not walk for a month.

The elbow was operated (see photo) and after a month I started walking a bit. Than dystrophy got a hold of my arm, an elbow that would not move for an inch, a shoulder that was frozen and a back that haunted me at night. Positivity was my motto but that gradually disappeared when I saw powerlessness in the eyes of the physiotherapist. My greatest fear was that I could never paint again. When I more or less functioned again, I started going to my atelier again. This was the first artwork that I was able to create with my unwilling arm. Now, everything is functional and strong again but this endeavor is carved in my memory. Sometime I glance at my recovered and healthy arm and say ” glad that your here and that you are functional!

2020 stands, for me, next to Corona, in the theme of my 50th anniversary on planet earth. Suddenly, out of nowhere, my youth is over ( : When I became 30 I was in the midst of a coming of age- like burn out, when I became 40 I thought that the best years were left behind me. Decay seemed inevitabel. This self-portrait titled Gloomy & 40 is created in the spirit of this thought. With self irony of course. Now, I become 50 years of age, I feel fantastic. Despite of the number, I am not feeling old or over the hill yet. It is probably a great mindfuck but I sense great freedom and happiness, the best is still to come. They say, love is pure chemistry too. But I don’t care as long as it’s convincing to me, its just fine. There’s a new self-portrait on the horizon, a few months to go because 24th of August will be the day…..

An artist makes art, a painter paints. It doen not matter on what kind of surface, either canvas, wood, wall or skin. An artist can express it self on almost anything. I my early years of becoming an visual artist there was plenty room for playing and discovering. I shared my working space with Mark van Enk En Gina Draaisma. We worked solo but collaborated a lot. What made this friendship significant was the great fun we experienced creating. Limitless. For example we made murals in the centre passage of The Oude Ambachtsschool, Zwolle. Not without risk. Like acrobats balancing on selfmade landing stages with parachutes as deco material and left over paint. Some of the paintings are still there, survived the renovation as a souvenir of that period.

We also collaborated @ various 5th of May art projects – from concept to product. We stretched our limits to create a cool artwork. Commercially, we were not the most clever ones, but we felt rich with our creativity.

In the same period I started more or less  coincidental with bodypainting. The cause was an open call by the E.E.G. to create a poster with the theme : ‘We create Our Own Europe’. I started working on this theme and asked a group of pregnant women to pose for me. Proverbial pregnant of an United Europe. Afterwards pregnant friends started asking me to paint their belly’s as well. So I did this for a while before I started to paint more people. On this picture you see me with Gina framed together in an antique frame (of my grandfather) The picture is made by Studio H. It is obvious that we were having fun.

After yesterdays Apocalypse I found it time for an Exodus (2009) We witness a swarm seagulls. The  immediate cause for making this artwork was a photo series I made earlier of seagulls in all different positions. More or less accidentally struck by the beauty of the flying seagull. I stil know where it was; Pink beach Bonaire. The seagulls were cheeky as always and were drawn in large numbers to the noise of the cracking plastic bag of bread- cracker- chips and begged it away. Annoying but funny. It gave the opportunity to take a good up close look at them and to make pictures. Later on I molded it into the cluster we see on the canvas (like a collage). Exodus is a title that needs no clarification and has the same biblical connotation as Apocalypse. The swarm represents the litterary stream of refugees. This subject captured in large white open space with birds that represent freedom is a bit harsh. That is the tension I seek.

What goes up must go down. Dat boeit me. What goes up must go down.

Apocalypse, to be chipper for a change ( :, is made in 2007. Around this period Flying and falling was my theme (stil is) . Flying is freedom, falling is flying with an unfortunate out come. What goes up must go down. This seems to be a natural law. That fascinates me. All paradoxes of mankind are mine. as well. As something that wrenches inside, it forces me to think. And there is a lot that wrenches. The Apocalypse is the titel of a great movie but most off all a grim prediction about the end of times. What goes up must go down. Each end is a new beginning, Falling is falling with a unfortunate outcome. Wil there be an Apocalypse? We don’t know. Are we doing everything to get to that point? Maybe. To put some positive vibes on the contrary ; There may as well be constant mini apocalypses that we suffer, but then a clean slate could be the beautiful outcome of that.

To end this story with a smile check this great apocalyptic song Naturtrane van Nina Hagen

In 2011 I had a duo exhibition (@ Arte Presente) with sculpturer Thijs Kwakernaak. The exhibition was called Ego Display. The goal we had set for our selves was to portray each other. So I made several portraits of Thijs, amongst them 37 Attitudes. I portrayed Thijs, as a quick silver, both physical as mental, as all Thijs varieties possible. Thijs made a series of sculptures about me from stone & wood. As he saw me. For a while I was quiet a fanatic skater and I often passed his house @ the IJssel river in Zwolle This is how he portrayed mean action with spruce cat ears. Ik you take a closer look at the sculpture above, you could establish a actual skate position in the shade on the wall. Unfortunately, I forgot the meaning of the cat ears as well. It is needless to say that this portrait is a free interpetation. How ever, I loved this sculpture he made and he loved his Attitudes and we swapped. The ‘Marit’ holds a steady spot in my household ever since.

Is there life on Mars?

Een paar regels uit Is There Life On Mars van David Bowie. Maar Is there life on Mars? lijkt een zo gerechtvaardigde vraag. Of beter; is daar leven mogelijk?

Is there life on Mars?

A few lines from the song Is There Life On Mars by David Bowie. We know that Bowies style to make lyrics was to cut them up and toss them around before creating whole new mysterious and unparraleled lines. Still, If you analyse the lyrics a bit it seems that major Tom is looking from space (trough the eyes of God) and witnessing life on earth like it’s a great theatre. Like the divine Comedy by Dante? Maar Is there life on Mars?Or even better is life on Mars possible? It seems a righteous question. Nowadays a relevant one too because the first new -Martian refugees already made their reservations. But Mars, red, dead, and low on oxygen, appealing? I guess not. But our own old mother earth is worn out and exhausted. My idea would be; invest all the energy to travel to planet B in your old and own one, she deserves it.

The image speaks for it selves.

One Artwork A Day……….

There is no escaping, the need to reflect on the current ‘world wide’ situation. There is a lot of Corona activity on TV, radio and social media. Naturally, the world is disordered. I notices that the contant stream of information is getting into your system. The question, ‘What can I do?, what should I do pops up. Except for the usual do’s and don’ts.

I can not save life’s or sing to the elderly people (I can but I doubt the positive impact of my voice). I make art, and that is what I keep on doing the time to come. Time is on my side to to speak. Art is healing for the artist and the altlover. Corona is not becomming a theme in my communication. I make small contribution by offering a small visual escape the weeks to come. I dig into my archives and present one artwork a day, with a small comment on my site. If It not cures it will not harm. This week: Wheel Of Misfortune, Ignorance Is Bliss, Sunny Boy, Solitary en Sign Of The Times

Vrijdag 27-03-2020- An Artwork A Day 05 – Sign Of The Times 2008

Can’t help it.

In France a skinny man
Died of a big disease with a little name
By chance his girlfriend came across a needle
And soon she did the same

At home there are seventeen-year-old boys
And their idea of fun
Is being in a gang called The Disciples
High on crack, totin’ a machine gun

Time, time”

Friday 27-03-2020- An Artwork A Day 05 – Sign Of The Times 2008

Text collage from (own) essay about the signs of the time, resized in various sizes, copied and in parts processed to a portrait on MDF- & white acrylic paint. 110/110cm

The Titel is derived from the song ‘Sign Of The Times’ by Prince (not the content) The face is from John Malkovich. Both more ore less by coincedence. Sign Of The Times is a great song that reflects on time signs in his own way. The head of Malkovich, raw, piercing eyes and good shadow parts. De lines were written in a rush at the time. I can’t get around the fact that I’m somewhat of a pessimist. Can’t help it. I am making a real effort to embrace life and all my loved ones. But if everything silences around me and when I can hear my own thoughts, I often think: ‘Everything falls apart’, humanity, nature, biodiversity, the world. We spill to much, and treat other live forms sometimes with arrogance. This is also happening amongst our selves but when we regard to something as food or in our hunt for natural resources it maximizes. And we are the only animal that goes to war and polutes. This keeps me awake. I do not see a solution while the problems seems urgent. That is what the text is about. I put all this thought on a piece of paper in 2007 and created an image with the lines (a diptych). Not that it solves anything, but it gave me the opportuonatie to park it for a while. Now, in the light of the virus and measurements you can almost place anything in perspective and it seems spot on. The world of the invincible mammal is forced into a pause. Het probably offers unintentional room to fresh air, clean water and other earth inhabitants. What can we learn, what can we gain? We don’t know yet.

Acryl on MDF- 110/110 cm 1997- In private collection

This is a portrait of Jeroen Barneveld (1997) a fellow *DOAS member. Back In those days DOAS was a vibrant slightly anarchistic but quiet firmly structured squatted incubator in the making. I had my workspace here for 13 years, worked on a voluntair basis in a political lobby and as a member of the board. Besides our efforts to protect the awesome building (Modernist – Stijl related architecture ‘Nieuwe Zakelijkheid’ 1932) for the wreckingball (done that), to gain a National monumental status (done that), and prevent degradation of the building (did that) It was also a fantastic creative playground. The word synergy suites us perfectly. One of the unique spellingpoints of DOAS were our legendary parties. To answer to a possible banding from our building we organized a spectacular (Venetian, carnavalesk) Bizarre March thought the city of Zwolle. We carried The Mimosa (pet name for DOAS to her proverbial grave in a genuine coffin. This was the igniter for the Phantom party (bal masque) that followed. It was a fantastic feast with outrageous outfits and make-up. This portrait of Jeroen, face-painted in real life as wel, is some kind of a dubbel portrait because of that. The Titel Solitary did not refer to the party but on the expression on his face. Now it accidentally fits the emerging solitary as a consequence of the current situation.

*DOAS = In full Oude Ambachtsschool ( The ‘Old’ School For Manual crafts – 1932) from 1994 till 2013 onder governance and in use by the governance collective DOAS, pet name Mimosa. Mission, preservation of the monumentale building and starting the first creative Incubator of Zwolle.

Woensdag 25 -03-2020- One Artwork A Day…….. 03- Sunny Boy

De woorden “It’s My Party And I Cry If I Want to”, doemen een beetje op. My Party, Cry If I Want To……. Of nog en mooiere ‘What does not kill you makes you stronger’

*Al Jolson performed with a black face as a protest to black people not being allowed to perform on stage. He was credited with single-handedly introducing African-American music to white audiences. As early as 1911, he became known for fighting against black discrimination on Broadway.

Wednesday 25 -03-2020- One Artwork A Day…….. 03- Sunny Boy

Acrylic en typex- ribbon on canvas 90/70 cm- 2008- In private collection

A portair of a boy without a name (or is must be Sunny). The title seems a contradiction with the chosen pallet of colours. The words ‘It’s my Party And I Cry If I Want to‘, comes to mind.I estimate the boys age around 8 years old. He looks self conscious at the camera, wears a self-folded party head but does not smile. Is his party canceled? The yellow accent on the right is the most sunny part of the entire painting. Though, for whom who looks a little further see’s softness and devotion in the features of the boy. My party, Cry If I Want To…… or better said, what does not kill you makes you stronger!

The titel is ‘stolen’ and altered after the similar book/film Sonny Boy  and *Al Jolsons song Sonny Boy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy1iOmqH27Y but has theme wise nothing to do with it.

24-03-2020- One Artwork A Day…….. 02 _ Ignorance is Bliss (Baby Einstein- God Dobbelt Niet)

One Artwork A Day…….. 02 _ Ignorance is Bliss (Baby Einstein- God Dobbelt Niet)

And Einstein quoted; ‘God does not play dice with the universe’. He stated that religion without science was blind & science without religion lame. Baby Einstein was already destined to become the great mind, he was, but at the time of his baby-hood his mind was mainly set on milk, mothers breast and comfort. Some people stay that way all their lives. Some people even believe that their better of that way. The heavenly state of not knowing, not wondering, just existing and following the basic instinct. That why this work is titled ‘ Ignorance Is Bliss’. As far as the human instinct goes….Unfortunately we are not prepped as the most peace loving animals.

01 Wheel Of Misfortune

Wheel Of Misfortune- 2007- 159/170 cm

Kunstwerk van vandaag: maandag 23-03-20= ‘Wheel Of Misfortune 2007.’

3d muur installatie, dynamisch (roterend).

Wheel Of Misfortune

Artwork of today: monday 23-03-20= ‘Wheel Of Misfortune 2007.’

3d wall installation, dynamic (rotating). Acrylicpaint, siliconkit (white), old record player and swing wheels on MDF.

We are all familiar with the Wheel Of Fortune. The wheel that is turned in quizshows. The numbers ore objects on the wheel are an indication of what the prize might be. My wheel of misfortune is more about Murphy’s law, what goes down, must go down, the chaos theory, the butterfly-effect. There is a logical ring to these terms but it is really quiet scientifically*. Who reviews the world with eyes open knows deep inside that winning is not a constant factor. We are looking upon our selves as winners more and more. Where there’s a winner, there are losers. I notice that since halfway the 20th century we starting to regard on life as feasible and that we all could be winners. You can create your own destiny and if you put your mind to it, anything is possible, it is a matter of believing in your self. We lifted mankind on the higher sceme of things but it comes with a price. This price tag is been there for a long time but is overlooked or neglected by the many of us, the show must go on.! There is no need for me to mention the price as such, everyone knows by now.

*The butterfly effect

In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.

The term, closely associated with the work of Edward Lorenz, is derived from the metaphorical example of the details of a tornado (the exact time of formation, the exact path taken) being influenced by minor perturbations such as the flapping of the wings of a distant butterfly several weeks earlier. Lorenz discovered the effect when he observed that runs of his weather model with initial condition data that was rounded in a seemingly inconsequential manner would fail to reproduce the results of runs with the unrounded initial condition data. A very small change in initial conditions had created a significantly different outcome.[1]

The idea that small causes may have large effects in general and in weather specifically was earlier recognized by French mathematician and engineer Henri Poincaré and American mathematician and philosopher Norbert WienerEdward Lorenz’s work placed the concept of instability of the Earth’s atmosphere onto a quantitative base and linked the concept of instability to the properties of large classes of dynamic systems which are undergoing nonlinear dynamics and deterministic chaos.[2

Wheel Of Misfortune is an artwork from a period whereby falling and flying was a theme in my work. The escapist flying lies close to the inevitabel falling. The symbolic is also personal that goes for the escapism as for the falling.
