Helden (Heroes) 01- Fame

(For English scroll down) Bij deze presenteer ik een nieuwe digitale serie ‘ in the making’ : Helden (Heroes). Nummer 1 uit de serie: ‘Fame’.

Ik ben met deze serie begonnen om in mijn eigen behoefte te voorzien om mijn helden op een voetstuk te plaatsen. De helden die in deze serie ten tonele gevoerd gaan worden zijn helden die soms al een (bijna) heel leven mee gaan, die me hebben geïnspireerd, opgevoed en me vooral hebben laten zien dat je niet in een standaard mal hoeft te passen om je plek te kunnen vinden. Althans, zij waren voor mij het ultieme bewijs dat het beter was niet in een mal te passen. Veel aspecten van het leven heb ik (zeker als puber -jong volwassene) als benauwend of te sturend ervaren. Niet mijn opvoeding trouwens, ik mocht mijn eigen weg kiezen! Ik ben dan ook geboren in 1970. Ik weet niet of dat er iets mee te maken heeft maar het klinkt wel zo ( :

Fame: De artprint is een compilatie van diverse gemanipuleerde beelden, waaronder tweemaal David Bowie. In de linkerhoek zit Hunky Dory in de rechterhoek The Thin White Duke. Omgeven door de werelden waartussen gelaveerd moest worden uitgebeeld in de losgelagen rockster (featuring Jimmy Page > Led Zeppelin)en de boekhouder. Ik zal niet de enige zijn die Bowie een muzikaal en creatief genie vond. Toch voelt hij altijd een beetje als van mij. In ieder geval binnen de kaders van deze artprint. (English) Hereby I present my new digital art series in the making to you. The serie is called Helden (Heroes) and the first art print ‘Fame’

I started this serie to for fill my own need to put my personal heroes on a pedestal. The heroes on my ‘stage’ are with me for almost all my life, they inspired me, raised me and most important showed me that you not necessarily have to fit in a standard matrix to find your place in live. They were the ultimate proof that is was even better to not fit at all. I never succeeded fitting in any template, even if I tried, it is not given to me. I experienced that many aspects of live are to suffocating or conducting for me. Not my upbringing by the way, I was free to choose and find my own path.. I was born in 1970. Not sure of that got anything to do with it but it has this certain ring to it… ( :

Fame: The art print is a compilation of divers and manipulated images, amongst them Bowie twice. In the left corner we find Hunky Dory and in the right corner The thin White Duke. Both surrounded by the outskirts of worlds apart: The rockstar (featuring Jimmy Page > Led Zeppelin) and the bookkeeper. I shall not be the only one that recognize creative genius in this man but I kind of like to think I own him a little bit. Anyway within the borders of this art print, I do. The world is missing an angel or at least a (black) star (man)

(for English scroll down) Deze promotievideo van mijn nieuwe atelier aan de Rieteweg 10 geeft een leuke impressie van de werksfeer in mijn ‘kantoor’. Deze video is gemaakt door Damien Eektimmerman 2019.

Damien heeft in 2018 bij mij stage gelopen en dat met succes afgerond. Hij is inmiddels klaar met zijn opleiding (Cibap) en beweegt zich nu op het grensvlak van vormgeving en beeldende kunst. Binnenkort is er ook een expositie/presentatie van hem in Kunstruimte het Langhuis te bewonderen.

(English) This promotional video of my new atelier @ Rieteweg10, Zwolle shows you around and gives a nice impression of my ‘office’ atmosphere. This video is made by Damien Eektimmerman 2019.

Damien was my intern in 2018 and completed it with succes. In the meanwhile he finished his education (Cibap) and shifts interest-wise on the boundaries of design and art. Soon there’s an exhibition by his hand @ art-space het Langhuis

Onderdeel van de Remains Of Today serie.

Ontmoet verbal no.8. Een waterflesje is, of moet ik zeggen 6 waterflesjes, zijn de inspiratiebron voor dit kunstwerkje. Het zijn ingesleten termen als het gaat om keuze in water, plat of bubbels. Niet waard om een extra gedachte aan te verspillen nadat je gekozen hebt. Maar gecombineerd is het een statement. Het zegt zoveel als; Ik ben er nog, ik leef en bruis!

Meet verbal no 8. A bottle of water is, or should I say 6 bottles of water were the inspiration for this piece of art. Such common words and when it comes to the choice in water (flat or bubbly) not even worth to give it a second thought after you made your choice, But combined it’s a statement it seems to say; I am still here, alive and still sparkling!

Onderdeel van de Remains Of Today serie

De Amerikaanse droom is een begrip. Net als de uitspraak, ‘van krantenjongen naar miljonair’, een basis concept is over wat Noord-Amerika is en wil zijn. Namelijk; het land (de droom) (waar) gemaakt door immigranten uit heel de wereld. Elke Amerikaan behalve dan de Indiaan is non-native. De droom is de uitnodiging voor iedereen die er iets van wil maken. Want, “if you make it there, you make it anywhere”. Natuurlijk is dat niet voor iedere Amerikaan weggelegd.  Want het is wel het narratief van de winnaar en niet iedereen heeft evenveel toegang tot deze droom.

Part of the Remains Of Today series

The American Dream is an iconic concept Just like the phrase ‘from paperboy to millionaire’. A basic concept about what (North) America is and wants to be. That is; the country is made and created by immigrants from all over the world. Each American, except the Indian, is not native. The dream is an invitation for everybody who wants to chase it. If you make it there, you can make it anywhere, right?. Of course there is some cherry picking involved. The American dream is the story of the winners, not just everybody can claim this dream.

‘On reprise’ of met andere woorden uit het archief en opgefrist, collage ‘Spotless Mind’ uit 2005. Dit werk heeft ook enige jaren in opslag gestaan. Het maakt onderdeel uit van een tweeluik die geen tweeluik is. Deel 2 of 1 van het tweeluik heet ‘Nevermind’. Bij de hernieuwde kennismaking kwam ik tot de conclusie dat het inhoudelijk toch ook nog steeds actueel is.

Het beeld is onstaan uit een soort moodboards, ter inspiratie. Ik ben een soort plaatjes gek en veel intrigerende plaatjes waar dan ook vandaan hebben hun weg gevonden op dit paneel. Eerst terloops later, toen ik besloot het uit te werken bewust. Tussen de collage door ben ik gaan schilderen zodat er een coherent beeld is ontstaan. Zowel ‘Spotless Mind’ als ‘Nevermind’ verwijzen beide naar beroemde titels van een film ‘ Eternal sunshine on the spotless mind‘ en het album Nevermind van Nirvana. De mind is hier het centrale thema de spotless past naadloos in mijn ‘Brave New World’ thema (al gebruikte ik dat thema toen nog niet) en gaat indirect over censuur of de beïnvloedbare, stuurbare geest. Nevermind over een zekere gelatenheid. Daar kom ik later op terug.

On reprise’ or rephrased, from the archives and re-freshed, collage ‘‘Spotless Mind’from 2005. This artwork was in depot for several years. it is part of diptych that’s not a diptych. Part 2 or 1 of the diptych is called ‘Nevermind’. At the reunion with this work I came to the conclusion that this work is still up to date.

The Image emerged from some kind of inspirational moodboard .I am kind of a visual graphic maniac and lots of intriguing images were ever from found their ways to the inspiration board. At first sideways but later on consciously. In between the collage I started to paint it in to a coherent total. Aswel as ‘Spotless Mind’ als ‘Nevermind’ addresses titel wise to famous titles of a movie called ‘ Eternal sunshine on the spotless mind‘ and the Nirvana album ‘Nevermind’. The mind is the central issue here, the spotless one fits seamless into my ‘Brave New World‘ theme (although it did not existed yet in 2005) and it handles indirectly about censorship, the moldable and controllable mind, Nevermind about certain meekness. I will come back on that issue later.

Deel 2 in de rubriek: kunstwerken gesneuveld en weer gerevitaliseerd

(S)Hel(P) is ook niet geheel onaangedaan door de diverse verhuizingen heen gekomen. Met de laatste verhuizing als finishing touch of beter gezegd finishing off.

In 2013 gemaakt als aanklacht tegen grote olie maatschappijen die hun verantwoordelijkheid niet leken te nemen, zie titel. Het kunstwerk is een soort van ready made; globe + schoolbordverf + metalen figuren die ik eerder voor een spel gemaakt had als pionnen. (Vlucht 050511- ten behoeve van kunstproject tijdens Bevrijdingsfestival Overijssel| Maar dat is een heel ander verhaal, zie link.

In het spel, Vlucht 050511, vertegenwoordigen de metalen figuren vluchtelingen uit verschillende windstreken. Op de globe vertegenwoordigen ze een vluchtende massa.

Nu ik me thuis begin te voelen in mijn nieuwe atelier en ik vele oudere kunstwerken weer door mijn handen heb laten gaan, heb ik besloten dat enkele kunstwerken in aanmerking komen voor revisie. Andere werken verdwijnen dieper in het archief. De eerste die weer refreshed and re-presented is was ‘ Is There Life On Mars’ (een week geleden) en nu dan (S) Hel(P). Er volgen nog enkelen. Ik toon de werken opnieuw omdat ze iets in hun verschijning zijn veranderd door nieuwe ingrepen. En omdat ze kennelijk nog altijd actueel zijn. De wereld veranderd snel maar kennelijk blijven de grote thema’s onvermoeid het zelfde.

Part 2 in the section: artworks succumbed and reanimated

(S)Hel(P) sadly did not entirely overcame the last transport from atelier to new atelier.

It is made in 2013 as indictment against the large oil companies that seemed to discharged them selves of responsibility, see also titel artwork. The artwork is kind of a readymade; globe + blackboard paint + metal figures that were made earlier as pawns (for ‘Vlucht 050511’- on behalf of a 5th of May art project- Zwolle Overijssel) But thats an other story, see link.

In the game Vlucht 050511 the metal figures represent refugees from different parts of the world. On the globe they represent a fleeing mass.

Now, that I feel right at home at my new atelier and literally many older works passed trough my hands again, I decided that some of them are up for revision. Other works will probably end up deeper in the archives. The first refreshed and re-presented artwork was ‘ Is There Life On Mars’ (a week earlier) and now there’s (S) Hel(P). Few will follow. I re-present the works again because due to the interference details in there appearance are changed. And an other reason is that they seem to be still up to date, theme wise. The world is rapidly changing but the larger themes diligent stays the same.

(for english scroll down) De verhuizing van het atelier had bij sommige fragielere kunstwerken zijn tol geëist. Zo is het werk ‘ Is There Life On Mars’, ooit al eens van zijn voetstuk gevallen toen het geëxposeerd werd bij ‘Even’2009. Deze gekrenkte plekken zijn onaangeroerd gebleven tot eind 2018. De verhuizing zelf was de genadeklap. Een droef gebarsten bol met een gekreukt en verfrommeld papieren bootje triomfantelijk bovenop. Het kunstwerk zelf gemaakt in 2007 blijkt nog niks aan actualiteit ingeboet, sterker nog het is actueler dan dat het toen was. Dan komt de onvermijdelijke vraag of de butsen , deuken en kreukels niet ook heelgoed paste bij de conditie ofwel vermeende conditie van onze mooie maar tanende planeet aarde.

De esthetica heeft het gewonnen! Ik heb de bol gerestaureerd en het bootje vervangen voor twee bootjes. Ik kijk er nu weer met een frisse blik naar en besluit het zoveel jaar na dato op nieuw te presenteren als semi ‘nieuw’ kunstwerk. ‘Is There Life On Mars’ On resprise 2019

On reprise 2007/ 2019: restored en re-vitalised

The moving of my atelier demanded its tol on some fragile artworks. The art piece ‘ Is There Life On Mars’, was already tumbled of its pedestal while being exposed at ‘Even’ 2009(Temporary). The dents and cracks remained untouched, non-revised until the end of 2018. But the actual moving finished it off. A sadly bursted globe with wrinkled and torned paper boat victorious on top. The theme of the artwork itself (made in 2007) seems to be still contemporary. Even more contemporary than it was back than. The inevitable question raises whether the dents, wrinkles and cracks should not stay to match the current condition of our mothership ‘Earth’?

The esthetics won ! I restored the globe and replaced the paper boat with two new paper boats. Looking with new eyes I decided to re-present it as a semi new artwork. Is There Life On Mars’ On reprise 2019.

Tweede XS Academie-dag

Afgelopen zaterdag 15 december vond de 2e XS Academiedag plaats. Ditmaal a/d Rieteweg 10 (de nieuwe atelier locatie) Deze dag stond in het teken van modeltekenen, compositie, kleurenleer en opzet van het schilderij. De volgende en laatste keer zal 3 uur lang gewerkt worden aan het voltooien van de schilderijen.

Let op inschrijven voor de voorjaarsacademie kan al! Er zijn nog 4 plaatsen vrij:

Voorjaars-academie (gaat door bij voldoende inschrijvingen)
1- zaterdag   16 februari  15.00u tot 17u
2- zaterdag  16 maart      15.00 u tot 17u

Deze academie is tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met Museum de Fundatie en Go-Kids regio Zwolle De XS academie junior is de academie voor de allerjongste kunstenaars in de leeftijd van 8 tot 12 jaar

Latest painting/ laatste schilderij: ‘Liquid Crystal Dismay’

Hereby I present to you my latest work L.C.D. (Liquid Crystal Dismay)(scroll naar beneden voor NL)

An upside-down, futuristic space featuring two young Japanese girls in a doorway. A man dissolves in bright light. The girls are disconnected to each other and the third party in he room. The bizarre and unattached environment doesnt seems to affect them. So unaware and deeply involved with other matters. The room as presented is based on the interior of Museum Mumok in Vienna, the Japanese girls were also captured at a touristic site in Vienna and finally the dissolving man is derived from my lover. This painting is part of the ‘Brave New World’ series (inspired on Aldous Huxley’s dystrophic science fiction Brave New World 1932)

(NL)Bij deze presenteer ik mijn laatste werk L.C.D. (Liquid Crystal Dismay). Een futuristische ruimte op zijn kop toont twee jonge Japanse meisjes in een deur opening. Een man verdwijnt in het licht. De meisjes zijn ontkoppeld van elkaar en de derde partij in de ruimte. De vreemde en  onthechte omgeving lijken hen niet te raken. Zo  onbewust en diep verwikkeld in andere zaken als ze zijn. De ruimte die je ziet is ontleent aan het interieur van Museum Mumok in Wenen, de Japanse meisjes heb ik vastgelegd op een toeristische locatie in Wenen en tot slot de verdwijnende man, daar heb ik een foto van mijn partner voor gebruikt. Dit schilderij maakt deel uit van de serie Brave New World (geïnspireerd op Aldous Huxley ‘s dystopische sciencefiction ‘Brave New World’ uit 1932)
