Nummer 02 van de A-sides serie was een portret van Marvin Gaye getiteld Whats Going On. Whats Going On, een prachtig nummer en de titel van het gelijknamige album. Dit album staat bekend als één van Gayes beste en meest geëngageerde albums. This is what soul is al about,  als je het mij vraagt. Het laatste nummer van de B- side van het album is Inner City Blues, gelijk ook de titel van mijn B- Side, portret no. 2. Het is een indringend en muzikaal fantastisch nummer wat ontelbare keren is gecoverd. Thematisch gezien zou je kunnen zeggen dat het ook een Black Lives Matters anthem zou kunnen zijn, in die tijd maar zeker ook in onze tijd.  Het nummer gaat over de struggle in de Amerikaanse inner city getto’s, het gaat over economische malaise en politie geweld, in die tijd tegen een achtergrond van jonge kansloze Amerikanen die naar Vietnam gestuurd werden om ook nog in een zinloze oorlog te vechten.

Waar ik in deze dagen veel over na moet denken is de vraag: hoe adresseer je een probleem? Hoe vraag je aandacht voor een zaak. Als ik dan denk aan het ambassadeurschap van Marvin Gaye voor de zwarte zaak, denk ik dat hij een enorme bijdrage heeft geleverd. Juist door intelligentie, schoonheid en mooie maatschappij kritische poëzie de wereld in te sturen. 

“Oh, make me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Yea, it makes me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Crime is increasing
Trigger happy policing
Panic is spreading
God know where we’re heading”

Bizar hoe actueel het nummer lijkt. Maar zijn poëzie ging niet alleen over zwarte problematiek maar ook over andere maatschappelijke  issues zoals bijvoorbeeld vervuiling (Mercy Me).

Muziek zo intens, kunstzinnig en rijk dat het bij het gehele kleuren palet der mensheid binnen komt. Zijn muziek verbind en is pure liefde. 

Ik heb Marvin hier neergezet als de jonge soul god die hij was aan het begin van zijn carrière, centraal in beeld in een gouden gloed. De dubbele schaduw van zijn vader in de achtergrond en een banner van zijn latere sensueel beladen album I Want You aan het plafond.

Inner City Blues (English)

Number 02 of the A-sides series was a portrait of Marvin Gaye titled What’s Going On. What’s Going On, a marvellous song and the title of the eponymous album. This album is known as one of his most engaged albums. This is what soul is al about, if you asked me. The last number of the B-sides of the album is Inner City Blues and also the title of my B-sides portrait no. 02. It is a penetrating and stunning song covered by many artists. Thematically seen it might as well be a Black Lives Matter anthem, in those days but definitely in our age too. The song is about the struggle in the American Inner city ghettos, about economic malaise and police violence.  Back than situated against a backdrop of under privileged young men who were send to Vietnam to fight a senseless war.

These days the question: what is the best way to address problems’ comes to mind. I believe that Marvin Gaye was a good ambassador for the black cause. Given his intelligent, splendour and social awareness poetry that he brought into the world.

Bizarre how contemporary these lines are still now. But his poetry wasn’t just about black issues, it addressed more social issues like pollution for instance  (Mercy Me) 

Music that is so intense and rich that it touches the entire colour pallet that mankind beholds. His music is connecting and pure love. 

In my artwork I placed Marvin Like the young soul god he was at the beginning of his career surrounded by a golden glow. The double shade of his father in the background and a banner of his later sensual loaded album ‘I Want You’
