U.F.O.’s (Unidentified Found Objects) Dit zijn de eerste 2 UFO’s uit de serie. Een kenmerk van een UFO is dat het gevonden item niet door mij  te definiëren is en  er wordt bij niet in tekst wordt gecommuniceerd.

De objecten die op minimalistische wijze in compositie geplaatst zijn, zijn allen gevonden in de omgeving van mijn atelier aan de Rieteweg 10 te Zwolle en de fietsroute Rieteweg 10, naar thuis en vice versa.  Het zijn vaak stukken plastic afkomstig van ? die na het uitpakken, gebruiken van een groter iets op straat zijn terecht gekomen. Sinds ik daar oog voor heb vind ik de meest vreemde maar grafisch prachtige objecten. Vandaar ook de naam  U.F.O. Het wordt door mijn tussenkomst op een podium gezet en op een esthetische manier benaderd. Maar wat het eigenlijk in tweede instantie laat zien is hoeveel zooi we allemaal achterlaten op straat. Soms groot, zoals het vele fastfood afval wat vaak in bosjes achterblijft, maar dus ook vaak hele kleine non-descripte vormen. Trash die niemand ziet, die er bij liggen alsof moeder natuur ze daar heeft gepland en die als een steentje  in de rivier steeds van locatie veranderd. Zijn dit dezelfde stukjes plastic die uiteindelijk in buiken van vissen en vogels terecht komen?

Koop een apparaat bestaande uit meerdere delen en je krijgt een doos vol sub-dozen en plastic zakjes met allerhande kleine items. Deze zakjes zijn altijd voorzien van interessante teksten zoals op dit zakje; “plastic bags can be dangerous. To  avoid  suffocation keep away from baby and children.”

Daaronder vaak : Made in China.

Nogmaals, ik wil China niet (alleen) de schuld geven van de plastic soep maar ik stel ze even als voorbeeld, want geen land zo productief als China. Er moet ook gezegd dat er massa’s onzinnige plastic dingen worden verscheept vanuit China de hele wereld over. De bottomline; zij verkopen het, wij kopen het, dus blijven zij het verkopen en zo zit je in een oneindige spiraal.

The objects, placed minimalistic in composition, are found on the streets nearby my atelier at the Rieteweg 10, Zwolle. They are pieces of plastic, part of ? Surpluses a bigger item ? And probably hit the streets after an unwrapping routine. Ever since I am focussed on these small, strange but often graphically beautiful objects, I spot them all the time. Because of my intervention it gets staged and approached aesthetically.  But what it really reveals is the amount of trash we leave behind on the streets. Sometimes it concerns big litter like fast-food remains but as this proves also numerous non descript plastic anonymous items. Trash, noticed by no one, hanging around like it belongs there. As pieces of sandstone planned by Mother Nature, moving from location to location. Are these the same pieces of plastic found in stomachs of fish and seabirds?

Part of the Remains Of Today series

Buy a machine with multiple parts and you are getting a box filled with smaller boxes and all kinds of plastic bags filled with all kinds of, easy to lose, small items. On these bags you often find guidelines like: ‘plastic bags can be dangerous. To avoid suffocation, keep away from babies and children’ followed by the infamous ‘made in China’.

I don’t want to blame just China for the plastic soup, in the size of France on our seas, but we can’t get around the fact that they are one of the most productive countries. Amongst all products they also produce and ship millions of totally unnecessary items to the rest of the world. Big piles of idle plastic objects crossing the world. The real issue here is; they sell, we buy, they sell more and we buy more, and so we end up in an endless spiral!
