Commissioned by: ZAP and the City of Zwolle. A contribution to: the Architectural Biennale 2014 Zwolle. Scope: Various primary and secondary schools in Zwolle . Location expo: Zwolle centre
Wasted City is an educational project that focuses on architecture, sustainability, changing climate and creation. I co-developed it with Chantal de Wolde for primary and secondary education. The ( imaginary ) future city that the pupils build is made of waste and anticipates technological developments (Smart Cities), climate change (water management and sustainable energy sources). These are big themes that the pupils and students effortlessly mould into the most innovative and surprising ideas. Feasibility and realism are not required in a design. So the wildest concepts come to life. For the 2014 Architecture Biennale, we were asked by the city of Zwolle and the ZAP (Zwols Architectuur Podium) to hold a series of workshops at primary and secondary schools. The results would then be exhibited during the biennale and compiled into a book which would serve as the basis for new perspectives on the Zwolle of the future from the perspective of future adults. The useful ideas might one day be given a place in an urban development plan for the future Zwolle. The biennial is already behind us but the project can still be booked: via
