Street life documented through the eyes and lens of homeless people
For the project ‘Van de Straat’, the premise was that the people within this focus group are always moving amongst others but are actually invisible. As artists, we wanted to invite and stimulate them to show their true colours to the outside world in an artistic manner. As unknown makes unloved, we hoped that known makes loved!
De Herberg/WRZV in Zwolle’, was the place where we wanted to realize a photo project with the homeless. After a pilot project with residents of the ‘Herberg’, the idea was taken to the next level with Gerrit Teunis, head of the housing association ‘Beter Wonen Vechtdal’ and main sponsor of the ‘Herberg’ projects. Since the Herberg is a unique shelter in the Netherlands and officially restarted at a new location in 2009, this was a great moment to let the residents document their own habitat/world.
A beautiful coffee-table book about the project ‘Van De Straat’ has also been published with thanks to all sponsors. The book was compiled by us with photos of the participants, a photo report of the project itself and an introduction by innkeeper Joop van Ommen and Gerrit Teunis. The book is designed by Gijs Dragt.
In close collaboration with Joop van Ommen (Director WRZV halls and keeper of the Hostel), Freddie Trompetter (SWZ), the RIBW and Gerrit Teunis (Head of Sponsoring) and the residents of the Hostel. With thanks to the sponsors: Openbaar Belang, SWZ, Delta Wonen, and Beter Wonen Vechtdal’.Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
